He graduated from the Royal College, Colombo.
Career
Domestic Carrier
On December 18, 2015, he made his first-class debut for Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club in the 2015–16 Premier League Tournament.
In March 2018, he was named in Kandy’s squad for the 2017–18 Super Four Provincial Tournament. In August 2018, he was named to Kandy’s team for the 2018 SLC T20 League. The same month, Sri Lanka Cricket named him in a preliminary squad of 31 players for the 2018 Asia Cup.
Colombo selected him for the 2019 Super Provincial One-Day Tournament in March 2019. During the 2021 SLC Invitational T20 League tournament, he was chosen by the SLC Reds team.
After the players’ draft for the Lanka Premier League in November 2021, he was selected to play for the Dambulla Giants. During the 2022 Indian Premier League auction, Kolkata Knight Riders bought him. Kandy Falcons signed him for the third edition of the Lanka Premier League in July 2022.
International Cricket
Chamika Karunaratne was named to Sri Lanka’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup team in December 2018. In January 2019, he was added to Sri Lanka’s Test squad for the second Test against Australia.
Sri Lanka selected him for a Day International series against Bangladesh in May 2021. In July 2021, Sri Lanka’s squad for their series against India included him. He made his ODI debut on May 28, 2021, against Bangladesh. On July 25, 2021, he made his Twenty20 International debut for Sri Lanka against India. Karunaratne was named to Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in September 2021.
T20I
He made his T20I debut against India in 2021 at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium. He has played 25 T20I matches until now, taking 11 wickets at an average of 46.64 and with an economy rate of 7.79. He has also scored 159 runs at an average of 14.45 and with a strike rate of 110.42.
ODI
He got his chance to play ODI cricket vs. Bangladesh at Shere Bangla National Stadium in 2021. He has been allowed to represent Sri Lanka in 18 matches until now, and he has managed to take 16 wickets at an average of 28.75 and with an economy rate of 5.54. He has also scored 376 runs at an average of 34.18 and a strike rate of 87.65.
Test
He has played just 1 one match, and that was against Australia at Manuka Oval in 2019. He took one wicket in that match and scored 22 runs a game. After that, he was not given a chance to represent Sri Lanka in red-ball cricket,
IPL
Kolkata Knight Riders drafted him for the 2022 IPL but was not given a chance in any match.
Outside Cricket
Besides being a junior national champion in javelin throw, Chamika Karunaratne also played international badminton. His father, Louie Karunaratne, and his brothers Dinuka, Niluka, and Diluka are all professional badminton players.
As part of the Sri Lankan Badminton Nationals in February 2021, he competed against his elder brother, Niluka Karunaratne, in the first-round encounters.
