BCCI established the competition in 2007, with eight teams participating in the first season. The tournament’s owners were chosen through bidding on January 24, 2008, with a starting price of about $400 million for each team.
After the bidding, the selected bids and the locations where the teams will be headquartered were declared: Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mohali, Delhi, and Mumbai.
All of the franchises were ultimately sold for a total of $723.59 million. The Indian Cricket League decided to end in 2008.
The IPL was the first popular sport to stream live via YouTube in 2010. The IPL’s branding value was estimated by Duff & Phelps to be 47,500 crores (US $6.3 billion) in 2019.
The 2015 IPL tournament increased the Gross Domestic Product of the Indian economy by Rs 1,150 crores (US $150 million), according to the BCCI.

The IPL 2023 now counts RuPay as an official partner. The BCCI names TATA as VIVO’s replacement as the IPL 2023 edition title sponsor. The online food-buying company Swiggy is slated to be the 6th official on-ground sponsor of the Indian Premier League.
