Early Life

Shaheen Shah Afridi had cricketers in his family as one of his brothers, Riaz Afridi, had represented Pakistan in 2004 when Shaheen was just four years old.

Riaz Afridi’s career ended shortly, but he focused on his brother Shaheen, who helped him achieve good heights in hardball cricket.

The first time he was selected for the FATA team in trials. His physique, height, and fitness earned him the U-16 tour of Australia.

Career

Domestic Cricket

He played his first debut match for Khan Research Laboratories against Rawalpindi in the 2017-18 Quaid e Azam Trophy. He was perfect in his first match, and he took eight wickets for a mere 39 runs in the second innings.

His outstanding performance was not enough to help his team win the game, but he impressed everyone.

U-19 World Cup

After good domestic cricket performances, he got selected for the U-19 World Cup. He also impressed everyone there as well with his swinging deliveries. He took 12 wickets in 5 matches and was the leading wicket-taker for Pakistan.

PSL

He played his first PSL match against Multan Sultans in the 2018 edition, where he took three wickets for 40 runs in his 4-over spell.

After that, there was a dip in his performance till Lahore again met Multan in the second group match, where he took five wickets for just four runs.

To everyone’s surprise, Lahore Qalandars, in the 2022 PSL, announced Shaheen Shah Afridi as the team’s captain, which proved fruitful as he helped them get to their maiden PSL title.

T20I

2018 he played his first T20I against West Indies and never looked back. He has taken 47 wickets in 40 matches at an average of 24.32 and an economy of 7.76.

He is currently ranked 12 in the ICC Men’s T20I bowlers ranking. In T20I, he is known for his first over-lethal spell and pinpoints Yorkers.

ODI

He made his ODI debut also in 2018 against Afghanistan. He has taken 62 wickets in 32 matches at an average of 23. 87 and at the economy of 5.51 till now. He is ranked number 3 in the ICC Men’s ODI bowlers ranking.

Test

2018 can be regarded as the best year in the life of Shaheen Shah Afridi, as he was even handed the test cap in the same year. He made his debut against New- Zealand.

Till now, he has taken 99 wickets in 25 matches at an average of 24.87 with an economy rate of 49.07. He is ranked number 3 in the ICC Men’s Test bowlers ranking.

2019 World Cup

He was also impressive in the 2019 ODI world cup, where he took 16 wickets in 5 matches at an average of a mere 14.62 with a 6 for against Bangladesh at lord’s cricket ground.

2021 World Cup

Like any other event, he was also excellent in the 2021 T20 World Cup, where he helped Pakistan to beat India for the first time in any world cup match, regardless of the game. He was given the Man of the Match award in that match.
