Gaddafi Stadium History

Construction

Nasreddin Murat-Khan, a Pakistani architect and engineer of Russian descent, created the model, and Mian Abdul Khaliq & Company built it in 1959. When it hosted the final of the 1996 Cricket World Cup, the stadium underwent renovations.

Stadium Rename

The stadium was renamed in Muammar Gaddafi’s memory in 1974 after he spoke in favor of Pakistan’s right to build nuclear weapons at the second Conference of the Islamic Council conference in Lahore.

To support the newly elected government in Libya, the PCB contemplated renaming the stadium on 23 Oct 2011, after Gaddafi’s death.

In the latter part of October 2011, the Punjab Olympic Association wrote to the state prime minister with a similar comment.

Redesign The Stadium

For the 1996 Cricket World Cup, designer Nayyar Ali Dada, who graduated from the National College of Arts, refurbished the Gaddafi Ground from 1995 to 1996. Arches and crimson, hand-laid stonework were used in Dada’s renovation. Moreover, Dada had seats made out of plastic to replace the old concrete ones.

So under seats, the lower area was closed and made into stores with boutiques and workplaces. The largest cricket venue in Pakistan, Gaddafi venue, was originally able to hold 65,250 spectators, but the layout of its fences cut that number to just 20,000.
